Yay for R21Freak’s File of the Week!

This week’s File of the Week goes to Spooky Song by Carius. Carius is a brand new member of the r21freak community but has nonetheless become a part in the simfile scene here. With packs and new simfiles on the horizon, I can’t wait to see what Carius shows us next. This week we honor his Spooky Song, a really cool 9 footer with all sort of things going for it.
The file starts off pretty chill, steps following Stephanie’s bouncy vocals (it’s a LazyTown tune, btw). Carius follows them very well, with good patterns that just look like a blast. He’s pretty accurate, too, for the most part. After a cool stop at beat 21 (Stephanie goes “ssssshh” and everything cuts out briefly), the fun 16th note patterns continue until…
“BOO!” Carius accentuates this emphatic moment by using a cool negative BPM trick. Out of nowhere, steps with mines appear right with the “BOO!” It’s a really neat trick that happens three times in the file, all three of which are definitely worth learning. Moving on, we encounter slowdown in m33 that segways into another negative BPM section followed by more fun chorus patterns. The chart ends with another short slow part and finally one last “BOO!”, this time spelled out with mines (a somewhat tired gimmick that actually works well here).
As cool as this file is, there are definitely things that could be improved. My main gripe with the simfile was the amount of ambiguous steps (notes that could potentially be hit with either the left or right foot but also potentially make for subsequent awkwardness). For example, at beat 116 and later on at 150.5 there’s an LR jump followed by an up arrow. It’s not entirely clear which foot is supposed to hit that note, and if hit by the “incorrect” foot, the following notes would end up doublestepped. But other than this, there weren’t any serious problems with the file that would outweigh its sheer fun.
So yeah, major props, Carius!. I really hope you keep up the good work and keep releasing cool simfiles like this. I’m definitely looking forward to your future files, and I know I’m not alone here. :)

I feel happy about that because I’ve only really been posting stuff there over the past week, also promotes my upcoming song pack a bit more too which is always a good thing, since you have to be a member at R21Freak to download the song; I’ll drop a link to the one I’m hosting here, though I do urge any aspiring step artists out there to sign up and show them what you have to offer as well as look at what they have already offered you upon registering.

In other news I tried my luck as a sound editor today to try and make a Megamix song for my pack; titled “Blueberry Flapjack”, the song is a mash-up of 6 songs that I have already completed the steps of, you can Click Here to download the mp3 of it, or if the song player at the top is still playing it then you can stream it from there.
All-in-all for a first try at mashing music together I think I did a pretty good job, everything matched up nicely when I stepped it out, there were no real glitches so I’m confident that people will enjoy it.
